SynthID Bio: Google DeepMind watermarks proteins designed by AI
A tool to tell apart proteins designed by AI. Google DeepMind is sharing code, data and weights with the research community.
Source of truthdeepmind.google/…/introducing-synthid-b…Google DeepMind presented SynthID Bio on September 30, 2026, a proof of concept for watermarking proteins designed by AI. For sequences, it subtly guides which amino acids are chosen; for 3D structures, it slightly adjusts atomic coordinates. According to the company, in lab tests on three targets, watermarked proteins matched the hit rate and binding affinity of unwatermarked ones. For AlphaFold 3, it fine-tunes a small part of the network. Code, data and weights are being released to the research community. An open problem, by Google DeepMind's own account: resistance to deliberate tampering.
